To Heaven and Back: A Doctor’s Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels and Life Again indeed centers around Mary Neal’s near-death experience, but it is in fact more of a spiritual biography and testament to her faith than a book about Heaven. I’ve read several of the other accounts of people who’ve had near-death experiences and this one had less detail about the afterlife than the others. That said, this book is a beautiful testimony to the presence of God and how that presence changes lives.
The book is very well written and easy to read. Dr. Neal has lived an extraordinary life in every way. While I had some trouble relating to the lifestyle of her family (and I could have lived without the name-dropping — John Kerry, Barack Obama, Carole King — which could have easily been omitted), I had no trouble relating to her experience of God’s presence in her life and the sustaining force that He is in times of trouble.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. To Heaven and Back seemed a quite sincere and well-intentioned attestation to the love of God and of his tender mercies.
