Courageous by Randy Alcorn

Randy Alcorn did a great job adapting the screenplay into a novel for the upcoming movie, Courageous. The book is an easy read that flows well through the parallel story lines. Following the lives of a handful of police officers in Albany, GA the story takes us to work with them and leads us into the behind-the-scenes of their family lives as well. Through a series of tragedies and challenges, Courageous leads the reader to contemplate their role in their family. The story is centered around the theme of turning fathers’ hearts to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. It takes numerous angles to show how a Godly man can influence lives. I enjoyed reading the book and look forward to the movie.

Sadly, I’m a bit cynical and believe that the book portrays things in a way that seldom occur in real life. The father that has alienated his son seldom is able to turn that heart around in such a complete way. Still, I like the book’s examples. If we as fathers and mothers don’t believe it is possible to “do it right” then we won’t even try. If you need some inspiration to be a better parent (especially fathers), you’ll like this book. With God all things are possible! Praying that Courageous proves to be a turning point for the broken families in our culture.
